Everyone reading this is in rescue in some sense. Maybe you're a rescuer. Or you have a rescue husky. Or you want a rescue husky. Or you just want to support rescue huskies. What draws you to this world?
For me, it's the moment you see the light come back into their eyes... when they know it's just joy and safety from here on out.
I was reminded of that recently, when I fostered this kid, Remi, a rescue from a January kill list in Modesto, California. Here are photos of his weekend in my home. How did we make this magic happen despite H3's intake hold? Well, the moment I saw him, I knew that he was destined for a very specific family - one who suffered a brutal, untimely loss of a young, uncannily similar (in looks, behavior, and age) rescue husky, Saint, last December. I knew that we would team up to rescue Remi in Saint's honor, such that Remi would be the rare halfway husky who never saw Eufaula ... and thus didn't bump up against the intake hold. (Real talk: let a lawyer anywhere near your rescue, and they will find the loophole in your intake hold. Sorry not sorry, HBIC. 😈)
I'd like to invite you all to join us tomorrow as we celebrate Valentine's Day in the way it should always be celebrated: with red rescue huskies. Early in the day, I hope to share Saint's story with you and invite you to remember him with us. And that way, once you know Saint's story, you will all fully share in our joy as we show you Remi stepping into his forever tomorrow evening ... as he turns into the Valentine of a very special family, and they turn into his. ❤️
But that is tomorrow's adventure. Tonight, I'm reflecting on the bittersweetness of "halfway" - to love a rescue enough to let them into your life, heart, and home, and then to love them enough to let them go into their forever, even though you can see - and will long perceive - the hole in your own house where they could have lived.
I'd love to hear your stories and see your photos, of the fosters you have loved enough to let go into their forevers, and of those you loved too much to ever let go... those who failed into their forevers. Share them all with us in the comments. ❤️
And stay tuned because we are so excited to share tomorrow with you.
Bethany
