Stolen Voices

Recently we shared a husky that desperately needed adoption. At Husky Halfway House, we usually focus on highlighting the huskies under our direct care. However, sometimes a situation arises that we can’t ignore, and Nikolai is one of those cases. He was stuck in a shelter in New Jersey with only one application to adopt and it was from someone who inquired about the cost of debarking him.

Many of you were floored that this was still legal in our country. How could you do that to a dog? How could you medically destroy their ability to verbally communicate? How could you steal their voice?

Selene & Sonja are two beautiful Siberian Huskies who were robbed of their voices through an outdated, unnecessary procedure called devocalization, also known as "debarking".

We rescued them in January 2022. Jenni was in total shock when she heard them for the first time. Their barks were.... muted. Thankfully they are safe and loved in their forever homes but we will NEVER forget the torture these girls have been through.

They will never get to howl or talk in their true husky language. They were subjected to a cruel and barbaric form of behavioral modification that causes more harm than good for canines as a whole.

We started a petition to get the laws changed. We did a news interview too and currently have over 170,000 signatures on that petition!

This procedure should be outlawed across all 50 states. Debarking is currently banned in only 2 US states: Massachusetts and New Jersey. Let’s come together to end devocalization procedures for good. Let’s be a voice for the voiceless.
