Kai is 6 years old and one of our sanctuary huskies. If you've been following Husky Halfway House for a while, you probably remember the scare he gave us last year..

Kai was diagnosed with Masticatory Muscle Myositis (MMM), a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the muscles used for chewing. At his sickest, he couldn't even open his mouth to eat without pain. He was losing weight despite trying to eat, couldn't keep food or water down, and for a while we truly didn't know what was going to happen..

Watching such a vibrant husky fade so quickly was heartbreaking..
.
Thankfully, with the help of our veterinary specialist, the right medications, and a lot of determination from Kai himself, he pulled through. Today he's thriving, living his best sanctuary life with his pack..

Kai has always had a personality that fills the room. If you've seen Jenni's video from his rescue ride home, you've probably heard him singing right along with her. That Jersey boy has always had plenty to say, and thankfully, he still does..

He's sassy, funny, charming, and just opinionated enough to keep everyone on their toes..
.
The first time I (Tracy) met Kai in person, I made the rookie mistake of reaching for his neck. I didn't know it was a spot he really didn't like to have touched. He very politely took my hand in his mouth and moved it away. No panic, no aggression, just a very clear, "Absolutely not.".

We've been besties ever since..

Seeing him healthy now makes moments like that even sweeter. After everything he's been through, watching him sing with the pack, sass the staff, and enjoy life again is something we'll never take for granted..

Kai may be a sanctuary husky, but he reminds us that success isn't always measured by adoptions. Sometimes it's measured by getting one more day, then another, until suddenly you're watching a dog who was once fighting for his life happily being his wonderfully dramatic self again..

That’s where Virtual Adoptions come in.
When you virtually adopt, you’re sponsoring one of our Halfway Huskies while they wait for their forever home.You’re helping cover their daily care, meals, medication, and their second chance.
How it works
You choose your husky and your level of sponsorship, and we’ll take care of the rest.
If your chosen dog’s sponsorship is already met for the month, your donation will automatically go toward the next husky with the highest need.
If your husky gets adopted, we’ll contact you with the details of your new Halfway Husky and offer the option to switch or continue your sponsorship.
