Rescue at the Rescue

My heart just dropped when Melissa called freaking out telling me to come to the cabin NOW. I had actually heard the cry myself and paused to try to figure out what it was. That cry saved that babes life. You see, we found mom about 15 hours before and had NO CLUE she had had a baby or babies. She is literally not showing weight or milk boobs at all. We trapped her to bring in for prep to be spayed.

There were actually two feral female dogs under that cabin, both were to have NOT been bred by the breeder but since polar bears mama didn’t give us any indication that she was pregnant, it wasn’t until we forced the other female out and realized she ABSOLUTELY cannot be pregnant or have had babes. With that realization we rushed Jasmine to her babe knowing it had been more than half a day.

Again, my heart just dropped thinking about the what ifs or the what’s!! We only found one baby and the other female had been guarding her for those hours but couldn’t feed the babe of course so luckily, babe started to cry for it’s real mama.

Once getting Jasmine reunited with her babe, I sat in her air conditioned clean room with her and begged her to tell me why she didn’t tell me lol. Poor kid. Had she looked it, been even old enough to consider it and had we had any clue, we wouldn’t have left her to come out on her own. Lesson learned. All unaltered females that come in will go under 24/7 watch quarantine until altered.

Yes, my heart hurts knowing I could have done something sooner but I have come to terms with the fact that THIS IS NOT MY FAULT, or the fault of my staff, this is the breeders fault and the people who abandon so many of their dogs that we have to come up with solutions that are not always the best. But really, we are good enough and that mama will never have to go through this again. She will NEVER see the side of a dirty outdoor wall while she has babies in the dirt. Ever.

I feel comfort in knowing that because mama is so young and still doesn’t look pregnant or like she is nursing that the chances are highest she only had one babe anyway. Her one and done.

I try to imagine what she was thinking when she had her babe under that cabin while she watched other dogs yell two feet away from behind a fence, Or needing to eat and having to leave her babe under there.. I fed her twice during the time she was there, she came out, ate her food and ran back under! Until that moment Melissa managed to catch her and we left her baby behind as we put her in the building waiting for her spay.

Ugh Jasmine and polar bear are reunited and the other female is also inside waiting for her spay. This was a huge lesson for us. Will I ever quarantine a stray husky inside a little kennel or shelter type setting to torture her for weeks while we make she she is t pregnant? Nope. But I will not allow them to be so independent here in the beginning. When they first arrive, now that we have our new space, they will be watched closely and spoiled with yummy food and medicines to make them better, when they are ready to join the pack in full force I will release them into it, but for now, it’s 24/7 baby watch because damn.. no babies on my watch please.
